Catherine Looby Travels to Immokalee, FL for Service Mission

2016 Apr 28

Catherine Looby is among a group of students who recently traveled to Immokalee, FL as part of immersion experiences sponsored by John Carroll University's Office of Campus Ministry during spring break. Immersion experiences challenge students to engage the realities of the world while reflecting on the values of human dignity and servant leadership. Students were assigned to one of three destinations. Below is a brief description of their volunteer experiences in each location:

Immokalee, FL

John Carroll students went to Immokalee, a migrant farmer town in Southwest Florida, to work in afterschool programs, Guadalupe Social Services, Habitat for Humanity, the Immokalee Soccer School, and other agencies. Participants also attended presentations by the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and other local organizations and community leaders.

Mandeville, Jamaica

John Carroll is partnering with the Passionist Volunteers International, a year-long volunteer service program based primarily in Jamaica. Students have collaborated with members of various rural communities, visited Jamaicans in local infirmaries, HIV/AIDS clinics, afterschool literacy programs, and St. John Bosco Boys Home.

Louisville, KY

Campus Ministry has proudly sponsored the immersion trip to Kentucky for 10 years. In Louisville, JCU students are assigned to the CrossRoads Ministry, a social justice ministry that offers urban retreats with high school and college students, and primarily work with various refugee populations from all over the world.
