Peter Short earns a spot as finalist in national Medical Capital Innovation Competition

2017 May 16

Peter Short reached the finals of the Medical Capital Innovation Competition held at the Global Center for Health Innovation in late April. Short was on the two-person team, whose entry arose from a research project under the direction of Elena Manilich, Ph.D., assistant professor of Computer Science at John Carroll University. The software that Short helped develop uses machine learning algorithms to detect errors in blood tests before physicians have the opportunity to see the results.

The Competition is a two-day event that uniquely includes both collegiate and professional teams in the beginning stages of commercializing their innovative product or solution that optimizes big data to meet critical healthcare challenges.

Short and his fellow team member, both undergraduates, participated in the live competition where each team had 10 minutes to present their pitch with five minutes to answer questions from the judges. Their entry was selected for one of six slots in the finals from a national field of 26 Collegiate teams that were primarily comprised of postgraduates from highly competitive schools.
