Sean Freeman spends winter break with Campus Ministry Immersion Experience Program

2018 Feb 16

Sean Freeman recently traveled to El Salvador as part of John Carroll University's Campus Ministry Immersion Experience Program during the January 2018 winter break. Immersion experiences challenge students to engage the realities of the world while reflecting on the values of human dignity and servant leadership. Students were assigned to one of three destinations. Below is a brief description of their immersion experiences in each country:

El Salvador

John Carroll partners with CRISPAZ (Christians for Peace in El Salvador), a faith-based organization dedicated to building bridges of solidarity between the Church of the poor and marginalized communities through mutual accompaniment, striving together for peace, justice, sustainability, and human liberation. Participants learn about the rich culture and history of El Salvador through visiting organizations and agencies.

Jamaica

The University partners with Passionist Volunteers International, a year-long volunteer service program based primarily in Jamaica. John Carroll students build relationships with members of various rural communities, and spend time visiting local infirmaries, HIV/AIDS clinics, after-school literacy programs, and St. John Bosco Boys Home.

Nicaragua

This experience is focused on developing an understanding of the impact that trade has on the people of Nicaragua. John Carroll students analyze trade from various perspectives in the coffee and apparel industries in partnership with the Center for Global Education at Augsburg College. These activities include opportunities to meet with workers, management, government representatives, farmers, and landowners.
