Each spring the Department of History recognizes one to two graduating senior with its Outstanding Senior Award. Recipients must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement in coursework, research, and in their contributions to the academic vitality of the classroom. It is expected that GPA will reflect these qualities, but a high GPA is necessary but not sufficient in consideration of recipients.

Each year the Department of Theology and Religious Studies recognizes a graduating senior who displays exceptional intellectual curiosity and exhibits outstanding department citizenship in addition to performing well academically. In 2018, our faculty voted unanimously that Francis Boccuzzi receive our Outstanding Senior award.

Dr. Francis T. Huck's span in the Education Department was three decades, the 60s, 70s and 80s. He taught research and statistics, but his passion was Teacher Education. He was instrumental in developing strong university-school relationships through his work with field and clinical student teaching placements. Upon his retirement, the Department established the Francis T. Huck Award in his honor, recognizing the outstanding achievement in Student Teaching.

These awards honor senior education students for academic excellence based on their grade point averages. The department makes six to eight of these awards each year, divided among candidates for certification/licensure at different levels.

This award is for the best short story or creative non-fiction piece by a senior English major. It is named in honor of David LaGuardia, a former Academic Vice President at John Carroll whose teaching continues to inspire students.

This award is named in honor of Rev. Joseph A. Kiefer, S.J., who taught Classics at John Carroll University from 1927 to 1951. This award is presented to the graduating major who has exhibited outstanding scholastic achievement in the Classical languages.

Established in 1963 in honor of Eugene Mittinger, who served JCU for 38 years as a mathematics professor and also Registrar.

This award is given to a student who has shown outstanding academic performance as reflected in grades, research activity, service, and demonstrated enthusiasm for the discipline. Dr. Fenton Moore was a faculty member in the Biology Department from 1972 until his retirement in 2004 and served as department chair and as director of the Health Professions Advisory Committee. He was well-known for his concern for students and for the rigor of his teaching.

The Terence H. Ahearn, S.J. award goes to the outstanding Pre-Health Professions student and is named after the former director of the Biology Department at John Carroll University. Father Ahearn is considered to have established the basis for pre-medical and pre-health professions education here at JCU.

The Kathleen L. Barber Award is named for Professor Emerita and Former Political Science Department Chair, Kathleen L. Barber, and is awarded annually to senior political science majors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement in the discipline of Political Science.
